Came in for a broken “sway bar link” Yes, that is a coat hanger, cable, and an old extension cord being used to hold the trailing arm together.
OMG

It would nice if they were all photos from technitions.
I have noticed that a lot of other funny fails show up, simple mistakes that you make around your garage, or random distasteful modifications seen on the street.

I have to do a heater core this weekend. Was looking at the thread to cheer myself up! Ugh...no fun for me.

That’s where my heater core/fan is on the Vanagon.
It’s almost like they sent that down the assembly line first, and built the rest of the car around it.
Do you at least have a garage to do it in?

Sadly...no. Had a choice between a finished basement for the wife or a garage for me. Guess who won?

That is the problem with a heater core. The car runs fine. I just rebuilt the suspension. The core only has a pinhole leak. But you gotta GET to the damn thing. I just don’t trust anyplace other than a VW specialist ($$$) to do it properly and not fuck it up.

I once agreed to help a friend replace the heater core in his ‘95 Dodge Dakota... outside... in the winter... we pull the entire dash out, replace the core (which oddly doesn’t seem clogged... this should have been the first warning...) start it up, try to bleed it... no dice, no heat. he goes out and gets a new valve mechanism, we pull the dash apart again, put in the new valve, (old one *DOES* seem a little crusty...) same deal... at this point, and ONLY at this point I ask him if he had checked the hoses from the engine into the firewall before ordering up a new core and he says: “well there was no coolant flowing through, so I figured it had to be the core...”
“DID YOU CHECK THE ACTUAL HOSES???” (barely restrained from screaming this)
“well, no....”
I turn around and walk away, get into my car and drive home without saying a thing to him... we’d been dicking with this in the cold for close to 20 hours straight.
Next day I get a call from him “I replaced the return line to the engine, it was clogged... heat works fine now...”
he bought me beer, so we’re still friends.

I saw a mk3 VR6 GTI on Craigslist that looked really good, and was cheap, but it needed a heater core. So, I looked into how hard that would be.....and then I understood why they were selling the car.

Yeah man. Like McMike said, it is like they built the entire car around the heater core air box.

I did one of these for a buddy once. Not fun. 0/10 would do again. And I work on things you would expect to be much more intense all the time. No, vww/audi heater core is one of my top ten worst jobs of all time.

The kind of person that would drive a car that they had patched together like that, would see absolutely nothing wrong with that tire.

All I can say is pay extremely close attention to where all the different bolts and screws go, there are many different types, and be very careful not to break the linkages at the bottom of the housing.
I own one. Love it. Get a warranty though. They’re a first year only cat so they suffer from a lot of the R’s early problems. That being said, engine is one of Mercedes best and trans is great as long as it’s serviced every 40k. Avoid front air suspension if possible. They can also come with a wide range of options so look for one that has what you want. Get a pre purchase inspection, and make sure it has excellent service history. Best option though, R-class wise, would be 09 or newer, much more problem free and much more modern entertainment options, but still command much higher prices.

The posts that grind my gears are the fake ones that show something unmistakably catastrophic, yet are titled with some impossibly ignorant customer complaint (like a destroyed wheel “C/S TPMS light is on”, etc.).
Sure, maybe a handful of those were genuinely dumb customers with amazing levels of obliviousness. But I can’t help but feel that most of those titles were completely made up.

I remember when I first browsed that subreddit, I thought it was brilliant. Neglect and carelessness that I knew existed from owners, but had never seen it in person. It was amazing to see the stuff that came in off the street.
Then people started posted whatever they found, even taking photos that I had seen elsewhere, captioning them with “customer states car pulls to the right” or some bullshit like that to get a laugh.
I thought the idea of a tech-generated image dump was brilliant, but it didn’t last. I haven’t looked at it in quite a while because of it.

Yeah, some of it gets stale after a while. But I still check it every week. I can click & close, click & close through worn brakes and valve train porn pretty quickly.
It’s a fun way to learn, too. I’m just a shadetree home-gamer, and sometimes skim through the comments for more info. Sometimes I don’t even see the problem until I read where someone else points it out, like a brake caliper but the bleed screw’s on the bottom. D’oh! Glad I haven’t made that mistake yet; I’ll have to remember that one so it doesn’t happen to me.

LOL. I look at it two ways:
“Wow, that’s stupid. I’m glad I’m smart enough never to have made that mistake”
“Wow, that’s stupid. I’m glad I ....now know not to ever make that mistake”
